Hackers have stolen usernames and passwords for nearly two million accounts at Facebook, Google, Twitter, Yahoo and others, according to a report released this week.

Most common and hackable passwords on the internet

They are the keys that keep our emails, personal information and financial details safe, yet guessing someone else’s password is probably easier than you think.

Life these days has become largely dependent on passwords - whether we're checking our emails, transferring funds or shopping online, passwords have their part to play. We're constantly bombarded with horror stories of security breaches, fraud, and phishing sites. Users are consistently told that a strong password is essential these days to protect private data. Why is it, then, that users on websites opt for the same, consistent, insecure passwords time after time?

Taking an aggregate sample of passwords (primarily from the UK), we take a look at the most commonly occurring. If you spot your own password listed - it might just be time for a change!
So in the spirit of educational password-shaming, here's SplashData's list of this year's 25 worst passwords, along with our own expert analysis of what each one says about the sort of person who uses it. If you find one of your own on the list, it would be prudent to promptly
re-examine your entire lifechange it.

It seems almost too ridiculous to be true or perhaps it is just a symptom of poor imagination, but according to password management software provider SplashData, this was the most common password to be posted by hackers in 2013. Mark Burnett, author of Perfect Passwords who has compiled a database of 10,000 most common passwords collected from password sharing websites, also found this was the most common, occurring more than 32,000 times.

2. 123456

Easily remembered and easily typed, this is probably the most common password used on computer networks and email accounts.

Recent research showed that it was the most commonly used password in details of Hotmail accounts that have been leaked onto the internet.

It regularly tops the list of surveys and data gathered from password sharing websites.

Impervia, a software security specialist, analysed 32 million passwords that were leaked onto the internet in 2009. This was the most common, occurring 290,000 times.

 3.qwerty

A letter based variation on the 123456 password. These letters spell out the first six at the top left hand side of the keyboard.

Computer security specialists ZoneAlarm say this is probably the 20th most common password they have found being used while SplashData place it at number three.
4. Iloveyou

Both ZoneAlarm and SplashData place this password in their top twenty of most commonly used.

Quite who the users love is a mystery, but it is likely the hackers love them just as much.

Impervia found this to be the fourth most common password to be used in the data it analysed.
5. Princess

Either there are a lot of Disney fans, or people who are still clinging to the hope of meeting Prince Charming.

Impervia found this cropped up more than 35,000 times in the 32 million passwords it examined. It was the sixth most commonly used.
 6.welcome

This was the second most common password used by corporate networks and businesses to protect their systems, according to Trustwave. It was used as 1.3% of the time.

They described this sort of security as “pitifully simple. Variations like Welcome 1, welcome1 come up often.

First off, there were apparently only 442,773 passwords, contrary to the previously reported number I mentioned above. Secondly, 342,478 of them were unique, meaning that 100,295 passwords, or 22.65 percent of the total, were used by more than one person.
